If you're feeling overwhelmed, depleted, and stretched too thin, it's time to define your kingdom and set some boundaries.
We often avoid setting clear boundaries at work and in life because we don't want to rock the boat or come across as difficult. And if you're familiar with my work, you'll know I talk about boundaries a lot.
Breathing room is vital to thrive. Boundaries communicate self-worth and preserve your energy for what truly matters.
So, for the boundary-less among us, how do we start?
Step 1: Identify your core values and priorities. What's sacred in your life?
Step 2: Reflect on where you over-give your time and energy. What leaves you feeling resentful or tapped out? More importantly, who in your life is draining you? Yes, boundaries include distancing yourself from people too.
Step 3: Draft some boundary statements to protect your inner peace and precious resources:
- "Let me consider that request and get back to you." Give yourself decision space.
- "After 5pm I disconnect to spend time with family." Enforce work-life boundaries.
- "I'm happy to brainstorm ideas, but can't take on more work now." Clarity frees you.
Expect resistance. Stay gracious but firm. You don't owe over-explainations. Setting boundaries requires courage and consistency. Start small if needed. But freedom awaits on the other side!

It's Glow Zone time! Introducing Sarah Whuuk Yusuf, Principal Partner at Kayzen.
What does being in your "glow zone" career-wise feel like? How does it compare to previous roles?
It's like stepping into a space where my passions, skills, and purpose align seamlessly. It’s a state of drift where challenges excite me rather than overwhelm me, and I feel fully engaged and energized by my work. Every task feels like a meaningful contribution, not just to the organization but to the people whose lives are impacted by what I do.
In my glow zone, I am not just executing tasks but creating, leading, and innovating. It's about empowering others, shaping strategies, and seeing the tangible results of those efforts in the growth and transformation of individuals and organizations. There is an undeniable sense of purpose and clarity that drives me forward, knowing that I am part of something bigger than myself.
Comparing this to previous roles, the difference is stark. Early in my career, I often felt confined by rigid structures, focusing more on "ticking boxes" than truly making an impact. While those experiences were essential for my growth, they lacked the same sense of fulfillment. In contrast, being in my glow zone is about thriving, not just surviving. It’s where I am not only using my skills but also constantly expanding them, growing as a leader, and making choices that align with my values and vision for the future.
Ultimately, the glow zone is about finding work that not only challenges me intellectually but also feeds my purpose.
What advice would you give your younger self about unlocking your potential and defining success on your own terms?
If I could give my younger self advice on unlocking potential and defining success on my own terms, it would be this:
Firstly, never underestimate the power of curiosity. Allow your passion for learning to guide you, even when the path seems unconventional. Success is not a rigid concept; it evolves as you grow. You may start with one vision of what achievement looks like, but as you gain more experiences, you'll realize that success is deeply personal—it’s about growth, impact, and the fulfillment of your purpose, not external validation.
Be patient with yourself and trust that your journey is uniquely yours. The moments when you feel unsure or challenged are the very moments that shape your resilience. Embrace the discomfort that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone; it’s where true transformation happens.
Finally, surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Building relationships based on mutual growth will be one of your most valuable assets. And remember, success is not just about what you achieve, but also how you help others grow along the way. Define success by your own values, and you will unlock not just your potential but a life of purpose and fulfillment.
How do you maintain passion and continue growing even after achieving your initial career dreams?
Maintaining passion and continuing to grow after achieving initial career dreams requires a mindset shift—from focusing solely on the destination to embracing the journey of continuous learning and reinvention. For me, passion is fueled by purpose, and I’ve learned that my dreams aren’t static—they evolve as I do.
Once you reach a milestone, it’s essential to reflect on the impact you’ve made and ask yourself, “What’s next?” I view every achievement as a stepping stone, not a final destination. This keeps me curious and open to new possibilities. Staying connected to a sense of purpose helps me find joy in the process, no matter how far I’ve come.
I also surround myself with people who inspire me and challenge my thinking. Whether it's through mentoring others or seeking out mentors myself, there’s always something to learn. Growth comes from both teaching and being taught. Additionally, I prioritize personal development, taking courses, attending workshops, or diving into new fields of knowledge that may not directly relate to my current role but stretch my abilities.
Ultimately, passion is a living, breathing thing that must be nurtured. I do this by staying engaged in projects that align with my values and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. When your work is driven by purpose and curiosity, growth becomes a natural part of the journey, long after you’ve achieved your initial dreams.
I feel SO inspired after reading that, thank you Sarah.
