It's amazing isn't it, the pressure we put on ourselves to fit into someone else's version of who we are, or to speak to their story of us. And it's relatively easy to do.
It usually happens when we find ourselves in environments that make us feel less than, or 'othered.' This could be in a work context, in relationships, or in friendships.
Throughout my life I've worn the mask of not caring what people think of me. But the truth is that I do, we all do on some level. How quickly we move through the impact other people's perceptions have on us is where the power lies.
Once upon a time I found myself in an environment where I was 'othered' daily. My contributions in meetings were ignored, laughed at even. I was cut out of conversations, left out of key decisions, and made to feel like I was doing something wrong. It took me such a long time to confess to even my partner that I felt the way I did about work, and that the Sunday scaries had turned into something far worse, and I found myself in a real crisis of confidence.
When I left that situation, it took a long time to heal. It required deep, intentional work to find myself again, rebuild my confidence in what I do, and show up intentionally oncemore. I realised as part of the process that I had given so much of my power away in wanting to be accepted by a group of people conditoned and determined to exclude others, that I had started to lose myself. Never again. It's why I talk so much about boundaries in my work and why I'll never stop. Had I been firmer with mine, attached less weight to the opinions of others, and realised that I was trying to fix something that didn't belong to me... I may have come away from that experience a little less bruised.
So once again I declare it, never again. When I get the 'red flag' feeling about someone, I listen. I urge you to spend time with your intuition too, listening to your inner voice and realising the power of energy. If it doesn't feel right, it's highly likely that it isn't! If you are reading this and find yourself in a position where you feel you're internalising someone else's issue, I'm going to encourage you to pause and reflect on just how much responsibility you're taking for someone else's shit 👀
