Take up space.
I quite literally 'ran into' one of the other mums in the playground at drop off the other morning. It was a hectic start to the day, we were running late, and I needed to get home by 9am to jump on a call. I was already flustered, and I wasn't prepared for what happened next.
As I collided with said mum, I immediately fell into "I am SO SORRY oh my goodness" mode. She paused, looked directly at me and said "Don't apologise for taking up space my darling. We do enough of that already."
She said it so effortlessly and so breezily, that it threw me off. I muttered a "Ha yeah quite right babe!", carried on with the race to the classroom door, hurriedly kissed Ada goodbye, and made my way back to my car. But the entire drive home, I just kept replaying her words in my mind. "Don't apologise for taking up space my darling."
I didn't know just how much I needed those words, even though I spend most of my time saying the same thing to others. It was such a small and effortless permission slip to give another woman, but one that made a huge impact on my day.
And I know that despite the advice we give out, so many of us feel constant pressure to accommodate others—at work, at home, and in our relationships. We say yes to every request, put our needs last, and shrink ourselves in an effort to please.
But in the process, we lose our sense of self. That vibrant inner voice quiets to a whisper. I've spent the last few weeks coaching various groups of women and the same themes keep appearing:
❌ Lack of boundaries.
❌ Major people pleasing.
❌ Spending our energy on others instead of ourselves.
It's time for that to change. It's time we started unapologetically taking up more space, don't you agree?
This week, I challenge you to:
⭐ Start saying no to non-essential requests. Your time and energy are precious.
⭐ Speak up in meetings to share your ideas and perspective. They matter.
⭐ Prioritise activities that bring you joy each day, without guilt.
⭐ Treat yourself with the care and affection you'd give your best friend.
⭐ Take up space, physically and figuratively. You deserve to be seen and heard.
People-pleasing is an old coping mechanism. But your needs and feelings are just as valid as anyone else’s. This is your permission slip to let your light shine bright. No more hiding or shrinking.
Sending you courage and compassion this week, especially if you've been feelng a little fragile.
