What burnout really is
Burnout sucks. Like, really sucks. It destroys confidence, ruins nervous systems and in some cases, it takes lives.
There is a reason I'm talking about this. Mental-Health.org stated this year that 35% of adults have reported feeling high or extreme levels of stress always or often. In fact 1 in 5 people have had to take time off due to poor mental health caused by pressure or stress.
It's costing us. It's costing businesses. It's costing the economy. If that doesn't make the powers that be listen then I'm not sure what will.
And I know because I faced it.
A few years ago I made the brave decision to resign from a job that, on paper, was everything. It was in my dream industry, with some of the best people I've ever met (some who are still my besties to this day), but with a toxic and competitive work environment that saw me back on antidepressants after a 10 year break and close to entirely losing myself. And it wasn't just me. As an organisation we lost 2 people to suicide that year alone, countless people were being signed off from work, and the majority of people were turning to drink and drugs to cope. Yeah, that bad.
As a result, I wanted to share some of the main lessons I learned from Burnout:
✨ No job is worth my mental health. Not a single one.
✨ No amount of money is worth burnout. Not even throwing a fancy title my way and a £10k bonus.
✨ Not everyone will respect your boundaries. They’re important nonetheless.
✨ Sunday scaries are real. Listen to them. They’re telling you something isn’t right.
✨ My value isn’t determined by the work I do, the title I have, or where I work. Ever.
✨ Any organisation, team or environment that makes me feel even one teeny red flag is out of the question. My intuition about people and culture is always right. Every single time.
There is life beyond burnout.
Beautiful, bold, brilliant life.
You will heal. You will recover.
And you matter ❤️
