"You're just tired" Busting burnout misconceptions.
I remember someone saying this to me when I thought I was going to be quite literally crushed by life.
Every day tasks were a mountain to climb.
I'd lost my love for life and things I enjoyed.
I was relying heavily on booze and finding ways to numb the constant head noise.
I was burnt out, but at the time I had no idea. I just thought this was corporate girlie culture. I was so, so wrong.
Burnout is beyond ordinary exhaustion. It's chronic workplace and life stress that saps our entirety - mind, body, and soul.
Warning signs include fatigue, cynicism, lacking motivation, and feeling ineffective. Work life and home life suffer.
Causes can include:
- Overwork/unclear boundaries
- Lack of autonomy
- Misalignment between values and environment
- Poor social support
If this rings familiar, know that you are not the problem. It's the system.
Our hustle culture celebrates overdrive. But we need balance and nurturance to flourish. Is nurturance a word? It is now.
If the above resonates, I've got 3 tips to start finding your way through:
- Evaluate and set priorities. What truly matters right now? Let go of the rest. Delegate or remove unnecessary obligations.
- Restore yourself daily. Block time for movement, meditation, creativity - whatever energizes you. Protect your attention and energy.
- Connect with community. Don't isolate. Share your struggles and seek support. Together, we can change the rules.
You deserve to feel valued, empowered and renewed by your work. We only have one precious life - don't leave your soul behind.
We can heal burnout by healing the systems causing it. Put on your oxygen mask first, then raise your voice for change. I feel so deeply passionate about this that I recently qualified as a Burnout Awareness Coach. Fun fact? I'm one of about 6 in the entire WORLD.
